Technology Center NSBE Students Win Robotics Competition in Pittsburgh
On March 27, 2012, the Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five Technology Center’s National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Student Chapter traveled to Pittsburgh, PA to participate in the 38th Annual NSBE National Convention. Students were inspired to continue their academic pursuits by such leaders as former Ambassador Andrew Young and BET founder and media magnate Robert Johnson. In addition to attending academic and technical workshops and a Career and College Fair, the students were able to visit the Carnegie Science Center where they were able to test the limits of physics and science with hands-on activities and creative displays.
Two student teams won 1st and 2nd Place in the Coast Guard AROW Robotics Competition. During the day long competition, students were issued a robotics kit and were to design, build, test and operate a robot capable of operating on water to capture balls and deliver them to a designated spot. The winning teams were Keith Black, Isaac Morgan, Deonte Holmes, Miles Stroman, and Daniel Myers in 1st Place; and Tyjon Shivers, Glenn Warner, Terrence Simpson, and Matthew Dantzler in 2nd Place. Students also competed in other competitions to include the Try-Math-A-Lon and High School Science Fair.
High school seniors were celebrated at an exclusive luncheon hosted by the U.S. Marine Corps. During the event, student Christopher Pace was presented with the U.S. Marine Corps Leadership Recognition Award for his participation in extra-curricular and community activities. Christopher is a volunteer with one of the Marines greatest initiatives – Toys for Tots, and is involved in various school, community and civic organizations.
The trip was sponsored in part by Platinum Sponsors South Carolina State University 1890 Research and Extension Programs, Dr. G. Dale Wesson, Director; and The Dick Horne Foundation. Sponsors will be recognized at the 3rd Annual NSBE Banquet on Thursday April 26, 2012. Tickets are $10 in advance for all non-members and guests.
The Technology Center NSBE is open to all OCSD5 students in 4th – 12th grade. Membership is $5. You may contact NSBE Advisor Phyllis Pelzer or co-Advisor Kevin Smalls at 803-536-4473 for more information. Dr. Johnny Murdaugh is the Director of The Technology Center.
